Growing Up
I got a Ninja Foodi for Christmas. I love it so much that I’m doing something I haven’t done in years: cooking during my off-the-clock meals. The next step in my domestication? Growing some of my own ingredients. I’ll start an herb garden when it’s warm enough, but for now, I’m taking this article’s advice and growing some mushrooms in my kitchen. Supposedly, I’ll have oyster mushrooms ready to eat in less than two weeks. Mushroom risotto, here I come! – Alice Levitt, food editor/critic
Cheering for the Hometown Team
While the local teams have been back in action over the last few months, it is definitely a different experience. Before the pandemic, you would always be able to catch me at a Nats game during the summer and roam Capital One Arena in a Capitals jersey during the winter. Since sporting events are still off limits in the DMV, I haven’t been able to have that same connection to my favorite teams. Well, the Capitals and Wizards realized this and created the Virtual Gameday Experience for its fanbase. Now I can catch warm-ups, take in the national anthem and chat with other fans during home games, which is 100 times better then taking in the game by myself. – Michele Kettner, associate digital & research editor
Making it a Disco Night
If you live in this region and are not familiar with artist Maggie O’Neill, I suggest you check out her work. Her pop art paintings of Washington will remind you that the nation’s capital really is cool. But beyond her patriotic pop art, she’s got other cool art projects too. The latest? She’s set up a disco studio so you and whomever is in your Covid bubble can dance the night away. As we settle into the coldest part of winter, a night bopping around to some uplifting music is exactly the answer to my pandemic ennui. – Katie Bianco, editor
