Mount Vernon Woods Park to Open with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Fairfax County’s newest park brings play spaces and community gathering areas to Alexandria.

By Emily Perez April 16, 2026 at 7:00 am

A brand-new green space is ready to welcome its community in Fairfax County. Mount Vernon Woods Park officially opens April 18 after seven months of construction.

The first phase — completed in early 2025 — added new amenities such as a playground, fitness area, multisport court, and more. Phase 2 focused on the brand-new skate park, designed based on community input.

Hosted by Fairfax County Park Authority, the grand opening will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Family-friendly events will include skateboard demonstrations by Fairfax Surf Shop and soccer activities with Golden Boot Soccer.

“These spaces are vital to the health and vibrancy of our communities,” says Jai Cole, executive director of the Fairfax County Park Authority, in a press release. “Mount Vernon Woods Park reflects the Park Authority’s commitment to creating welcoming, accessible places where residents of all ages and abilities can gather, stay active and connect with nature.”

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation will offer a shuttle service between Gum Springs Community Center and Mount Vernon Woods Park from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on April 18.
