New Skate Park in Mount Vernon Woods Is on Track to Open This Winter

The project, designed with community input, is slated for completion this winter.

The Fairfax County Park Authority began construction on a new skate park this month, with completion slated for this winter.  Phase 1 of the Mount Vernon Woods Park renovation was completed earlier this year. It included new amenities like a fitness area, playground, picnic shelter, sport court, and parking lot.

After a public comment period last fall, the park was designed with community input. According to the Fairfax County Park Authority, the skate park design was developed in partnership with Spohn Ranch. The California-based construction company is known for their skate park designs.

“Local skaters were actively engaged during the planning process to create a space that meets the needs of both beginners and seasoned skaters,” says Andy Grabel, a public information officer for the Fairfax County Park Authority. “The result is a modern skate park with thoughtfully arranged features tailored to appeal to a wide range of skill levels.”

The Park Authority also shared that construction on the second phase of the park, including the skate park, began earlier this month. During this process, the surrounding community should expect minimal impact.

“While there may be occasional construction vehicle traffic along Fielding Street, the rest of Mount Vernon Park will remain open and fully accessible for community members to enjoy,” Grabel says. “Safety and accessibility remain top priorities throughout the construction process.”

Skate parks have been shown to foster creativity, collaboration, and active lifestyles, by allowing local youth and families to have a sense of community, Grabel says.
