9 of the Best Weekend Events in NoVA and DC

Beat the heat with live music and theatrical performances.

The weekend is here, and it’s sure to be a hot one. If you’re looking for ways to fill your days, check out these nine weekend events near Northern Virginia that are sure to keep you entertained, whether you’re looking for a family-friendly festival or a concert.  

Just remember that the extreme weather means you should check ahead to make sure any outdoor events haven’t been cancelled. See Fairfax County’s recommendations for heat safety and information on cooling centers.  

NSO Pops: Dolly Parton’s Threads 

June 27, 8 p.m. 

The National Symphony Orchestra will tell a story of the life, music, and legacy of Dolly Parton, accompanied by guest vocalists and musicians. It will feature a recording of Parton on screen, though the singer will not appear in person. The Kennedy Center: 2700 F St. NW, Washington, DC 

Broadway in the Park 

June 28, 8 p.m. 

Head to Wolf Trap to see Browadway stars Lindsay Mendes of Merrily We Roll Along and Kessie Mueller of Waitress. It’s a collaborative musical performance with Signature Theatre, so the two stars will be joined by many Signature Theatre performers. 1551 Trap Rd., Vienna, starting at $45.50 

Workhouse Fireworks Festival 

June 28, 4–9:30 p.m. 

The Fourth of July arrives early with the Workhouse Arts Center’s fireworks event this weekend. There will be live music, entertainment, and food and drinks to pair with the fiery display, plus a splash zone and carnival games. Workhouse Arts Center: 9518 Workhouse Wy., Lorton 

Alexandria Pride Fair  

June 28 

The eighth annual Pride Month celebration will feature more than 60 exhibitors, a drag story hour, food trucks, a mobile art lab, health services, and more. City Hall & Market Square: 301 King St., Alexandria, free  

The Roots  

June 29 

After selling out last year’s show, the legendary hip-hop band, led by Questlove and Black Thought, is back by popular demand. The house band of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon brings an electrifying fusion of soul, jazz, and hip-hop. Wolf Trap: 1551 Trap Rd., Vienna, tickets start at $52   

Take a Warbird Ride at Leesburg Airport 

June 28, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. 

The nonprofit group Capital Wing, an affiliate of the Commemorative Air Force, is offering special flights on a WWII TMB Avenger torpedo bomber at an event at the Leesburg Executive Airport this weekend. Visitors will also get to see dozens of aircraft fly in in the morning. 1001 Sycolin Rd., Leesburg 

Foodees Food & Culture Festival 

June 27–June 29 

Springfield Town Center will host a three-day festival with more than 40 food trucks and vendors. There will be gourmet bites and handmade crafts to browse all weekend. 6500 Springfield Mall, Springfield, free 

A Penguin’s Heart 

June 28–29, July 12–13 

Bring the kids to The Village at Leesburg this weekend for a family-friendly musical about a penguin who travels to Australia to visit its pen pal. 1600 Village Market Blvd. SE, Ste. 108, Leesburg, free 

Frankenstein 

Through June 29 

This is your last chance to see Emily Burns’ reimagination of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The performance “reveals the inner lives of Elizabeth and Victor Frankenstein in new ways,” for a new twist on the classic science fiction work. Klein Theatre: 450 Seventh St. NW, Washington, DC, starting at $83
