Now’s your chance to see the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy right here in Washington, DC. Starting in September, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden opens its Basquiat x Banksy exhibit — the first time the museum has displayed the works of either artist.
The exhibit runs from September 29 to October 26, 2025, as part of the museum’s 50th anniversary season. Basquiat x Banksy focuses on two paintings – Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump by Basquiat (pictured above) and Banksy’s response Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search.
In addition to the main artwork, the exhibit includes 20 smaller works on paper and wood made by Basquiat from the collection of Larry Warsh. Made between 1979 and 1985, the works depict the artist’s knowledge of art history. The exhibit also features the film Downtown 81 and shows Basquiat and other Manhattan artists during the early 1980s.
Public programming accompanies the Hirshhorn exhibit. The first program is a 6:30 p.m. free lecture on October 10 by Richard J. Powell, John Spencer Bassett professor of art and art history at Duke University. Advanced registration is required for the talk in the museum’s Ring Auditorium.
