After a year and a half in athleisure wear, we’re all ready to put on real clothes again. A Georgetown creative-events company is tapping into our desire to get spiffed-up and go out via a new exhibit with perfect backdrops for fashionistas to swap out that woefully outdated profile pic from the Before Times.
The team at Design Foundry, a creative company whose team of designers, craftspeople, and artisans produces engaging events, just unveiled Inside the Wardrobe, a 20,000-square-foot walk-through installation with more than 20 different experiences that are immersive, interactive—and absolutely Instagrammable.
Meant to break down the components of fashion, from the power of patterns to the origin of your favorite textile, the exhibit invites attendees to don their favorite garb while sashaying down a runway or snap a selfie while wearing a paper-doll cutout, in the middle of a neighborhood that’s long been known as a fashion hub of the District.
“We tried to explore all the different styles of fashion, from prints and patterns to colors and textures, hopefully reminding you of those signature pieces you haven’t pulled out of your closet since early 2020 or 2019,” says Annie Senatore, CEO and creative director of Design Foundry. “Through fun and surprising moments around every corner, guests are invited to explore all aspects of style, trends, and design in fashion.”
Senatore’s favorite spots are the hidden surprises in the button and zipper rooms, the textures in the fur room, and what she deems a “Zen moment”: being surrounded by felt and yarn in a hand-woven igloo that’s set in the desert, with a setting sun and hand-painted sunset surrounding it all.
Self-guided tours will be limited to small groups that will be given the opportunity to explore the rooms at their own pace, with social distancing guidelines in place. The exhibit also addresses the environmental impacts of fast fashion; there is even a place at the entrance to donate gently-worn clothing. But sustainability involves more than finding a new home for your unwanted outfits, Senatore believes. “Take the time to research where your clothing is coming from, and look at how it’s made to ensure you’re buying from sustainable sources who take the environment and human rights seriously.”
Inside the Wardrobe is located in Georgetown Park (entrance on the lower level near the DMV), at 3270 M Street NW, Suite C100. The exhibit runs Thursday to Sunday through August 29 and is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Timed tickets cost $28 per adult, $24 for students, seniors, military and first responders, and $19 for children, plus tax. A portion of the proceeds go to designated charity partners that strive to support self-expression and empowerment.
