Caps fans: you have now a chance to score some unique experiences and items by players of DC ‘s hockey team while donating to a worthy cause.
Hath’s Heroes, an organization formed in 2019 by Capitals forward Garnet Hathaway (pictured above) and his wife Lindsay to give back to first responders in the DC area, has launched a fundraiser through the MSE Foundation, the official charity of the Washington Capitals, Mystics and Wizards and the Capital City Go-Go. Now through Dec. 30 at 3 p.m., donors can give predetermined amounts starting at $10 on washcaps.com/hathsheroes, with proceeds benefiting the organization’s initiatives and programming; fans can also purchase an autographed photo of Hathaway for $25.
In addition to donating money, there are a variety of unique experiences and items to bid on in the online auction that’s part of the fundraiser. Virtual experiences include a trivia game about sitcom The Office with Hathaway and teammate Nic Dowd hosted by NBC Sports Washington’s Joe Beninati, a virtual three-course dinner party with Hathaway and teammate Brenden Dillan prepared by SuperFd Performance and Nutrition, and a virtual cooking experience with Hathaway and Capitals radio play-by-play voice John Walton. Items available for bidding include Capitals Reverse Retro jerseys autographed by either Hathway, Nicklas Backstrom or T.J. Oshie and a stick signed by Hathaway.
The experiences of Hathaway’s great-grandfather Garnet Mcelroy, a firefighter in Winnipeg, Canada, inspired Hathaway to form Hath’s Heroes. The organization holds other events throughout the year including providing Caps tickets to local first responders, meeting them and giving them a tour of the locker room, and visiting fire stations throughout the season, spending time with emergency workers. This past spring, the organization provided 3,962 meals prepared by SuperFd Sports Performance and Nutrition to first responders and their families, through local nonprofits Kid Power and DC Central Kitchen; this holiday season it has donated 940 holiday meals to firehouses in Arlington, Fairfax and Prince George’s County. And in September they used fan donations to collaborate with Mindful Junkie for a Mindfulness for First Responders training session, which covered how mindfulness can help with stress management, on and off the job.
