4 local national parks offering free admission on Veterans Day

Here are the parks where you can take advantage of the final fee-free day of the year.

With all of the history surrounding the region, there are also a lot of national parks commemorating historical events in our nation’s history. As we honor veterans this Wednesday, take some time to visit one of these four national parks around the DMV that are participating in Fee-Free day this Veterans Day.

Fort McHenry

Make a day trip to Baltimore to learn about Fort McHenry and the Battle of Baltimore. The battle was the inspiration behind Francis Scott Key’s poem that became the national anthem. As you roam the fort, watch the flag change and learn about the other key battles that came through the Chesapeake Bay. // 2400 E. Fort Ave., Baltimore

Great Falls Park

Enjoy a relaxing walk along the Potomac River at Great Falls Park. This national park is perfect if you want to take a quick walk to take in the sounds of nature and the cascading water. With 10 different trails on the Virginia side of the falls, there is a trail of hikers of all levels. If you are looking for an easier trail, take the 1.25-mile Patowmack Canal Trail, which leads you to all three overlooks by the falls. Those looking for a bigger challenge, should try the River Trail for a view from the cliffs. // 9200 Old Dominion Drive, McLean

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Spend Veterans Day in historic Harpers Ferry. As you visit and explore battlefields that surround the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, take in the views from the Murphy-Chambers Farm Trail. As you walk the trail, you will have a great overhead view of the Shenandoah River. This trail also allows you to see Civil War cannons and earthworks and the previous location of the John Brown Fort. // 171 Shoreline Drive, Harpers Ferry

Prince William Forest Park

Retreat into the woods for a serene day in nature. Whether you want to go hiking, ride your bike or take a camping trip, head over to Prince William Forest Park for your pick of outdoor activities. With over 37 miles of hiking trails, there are plenty of trails that are perfect for your scenery needs of the day. This week, try out the short Piedmont Forest Trail for a great view of the autumn leaves and the local wildlife. // 18710 Park Entrance Road, Triangle
