With uncertainty still surrounding the fall and winter seasons due to COVID-19, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra has announced the postponement of its 2020-2021 main subscription series.
A task force consisting of trustees, musicians, staff and community members discussed how the orchestra could open the main subscription series earlier this summer. The group ended up recommending that the series be postponed to protect the health of musicians, staff and audience members.
While the main subscription series has been postponed to the 2021-2022 season, the orchestra still plans to perform for the public. Instead of the traditional indoor concerts, the orchestra is moving live music concerts to outdoor venues around Alexandria.
These outdoor performances will feature small ensembles and a limited, socially distanced audience. If COVID-19 conditions improve and regulations are lifted, the orchestra may move indoors in spring 2021.
“The global pandemic has sadly forced many arts organizations to cancel or postpone performances,” said Alexandria Symphony Orchestra Board President Melynda Wilcox in a recent press release. “We look forward to presenting this exciting series when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, ASO remains active, bringing live music to the community in creative new ways.”
The entire 2020-2021 season has now been moved to 2021-2022, with plans to open next fall. This includes collaborations with the Alexandria Choral Society, Alexandria Film Festival, BalletNOVA and the National Symphony Orchestra horn section.
“Our 2021-2022 season will be bursting with energy—full of masterworks, collaborations and imaginative presentations,” said Maestro James Ross in the press release. “By next fall we expect to be able to move indoors with the large-scale programs we had planned. It will truly be a meaningful and unforgettable season, one that will inspire people to re-gather.”
