4 more drive-in movie theaters pop up in the region

If you’re missing summer outings to your local theater, these drive-in options will satisfy your cinema cravings.

By Katie Bianco July 14, 2020 at 2:34 pm

We’re well into summer and social distancing remains the main requirement for any form of entertainment. So, while a trip to an air-conditioned theater (remember those?) with a tub of popcorn and a cold Coke doesn’t appear to be on the horizon, drive-in theaters have experienced a resurgence. Plus, closer in, a number of venues have converted their spaces into pop-up drive-ins.

Here, four more temporary drive-in options to keep the silver screen in your life this summer.

Segra Field

Before Loudoun United returns to Segra Field for a modified soccer season, the venue is being used as a temporary drive-in theater. Catch the ’80s hit Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on Friday, July 31 (tickets go on sale on Thursday, July 16). Moviegoers can bring their own food and a limited number of picnic table spots are available to reserve ($40 per table, 5 person max). // 42095 Loudoun United Drive, Leesburg; $20 per car, $30 for VIP front-row spots

Union Market

Union Market in DC has been doing drive-ins before the pandemic made them cool again. The eighth annual drive-in series returned to Union Market’s parking lot on Fourth of July weekend and has two more dates left for its family-friendly Friday films: July 17 (Space Jam) and July 24 (The Lion King, live action). Perhaps the best part? You can order food from Union Market’s delicious vendors. Who needs popcorn anyway? // 1309 Fifth St. NE, Washington, DC; $20 per car

South Riding Town Center

This year, South Riding’s annual outdoor movie nights have been converted to drive-ins. The Tuesday-night event still has a number of movies left on its summer lineup including Toy Story 4 (July 21), Ugly Dolls (July 28), live action Aladdin (Aug. 11) and The LEGO Movie 2 (Aug. 18). Bonus: Domino’s Pizza will deliver to your car. // 43063 Peacock Market Plaza, Chantilly; free, registration required (registration opens for the Tuesday movie the prior Wednesday)

Massanutten Resort
Head out for a socially distanced weekend to the recently reopened four-season Virginia resort and include a drive-in movie night in your itinerary. The resort has transformed its Base Camp area into an outdoor movie venue on Tuesday evenings. The remaining dates include two Disney classics and an ’80s throwback with Finding Nemo (July 21), The Goonies (July 28) and Lilo & Stitch (Aug. 4). On Fridays and Saturdays, Base Camp is serving as a live music venue. // 1822 Resort Drive, Massanutten; free for resort guests
