9 ways to celebrate the Lunar New Year

Feb. 5 marks the Lunar New Year, ringing in the Year of the Pig. Here are 10 events to attend around NoVA.

12th Annual Chinese New Year Festival

The annual Chinese New Year Festival will be held on Feb. 2, at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church. Ring in the Year of the Pig with a dragon dance and parade, a lion dance, Asian food, kids’ activities, craft exhibitions, calligraphy lessons and more. // Luther Jackson Middle School: 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church; 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Free

Lunar New Year Celebration

Held at the Fashion Court at Tysons Corner Center on Feb. 2, the Lunar New Year Celebration will include cultural performances and arts and crafts. // Tysons Corner Center: 1961 Chain Bridge Road, Tysons; 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Free

Celebrate Lunar New Year

Fashion Centre at Pentagon City will host a celebration on the Metro Level with cultural entertainment for the whole family. There will be a lion dance, dragon dance, a Chinese dance series, three fashion shows, a guzheng musical performance, a Thai dance show and a Lao performance with traditional instruments and dance. // Fashion Centre at Pentagon City: 1100 S. Year of the Boar

Fair Oaks Mall is presenting its 16th annual Lunar New Year event with martial arts and dance performances Feb. 2-3. Over 15 countries will be represented by performers at the event, being held at the Grand Court West. // Fair Oaks Mall: 11750 Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax; 1-5 p.m.; Free

Lunar New Year Ice Cream Tasting Party

Ice Cream Jubilee, an ice cream brand with two locations in DC and one at Tysons Galleria, is serving tasting flights of six 2-ounce scoops at its tasting parties, being held through Feb. 5. You’ll even get an ice cream pint of any current flavor to take home after the tasting. Flavors included in the flight are boricha roasted barley tea, red bean almond cookie, matcha green tea, citrus Sichuan peppercorn, chocolate yuzu vegan sorbet and coconut lychee lime vegan sorbet. // Ice Cream Jubilee: 2001 International Drive, McLean; Times vary; $16

Chinese New Year Storytime and Craft

The Shirlington Branch Library will host a story time event for kids on Feb. 5. Listen to Lunar New Year stories and do a fun craft to celebrate the Year of the Boar. // Shirlington Branch Library: 4200 Campbell Ave., Arlington; 4:30-5:30 p.m.; Free

Chinese Lion Dance

Celebrate the Lunar New Year at George Mason Regional Library, where there will be a lion dance performance on Feb. 9. The lion dance will demonstrate emotions such as fright, anger, grace and joy as drums, gongs and cymbals play music. // George Mason Regional Library: 7001 Little River Turnpike, Annandale; 10:30-11 a.m.; Free

Dancing into the Chinese New Year

Xuejan Dance Ensemble will present classical Chinese dance, as well as Chinese folk and ethnic dancse at the Centreville Regional Library on Feb. 9. Enjoy the show as you learn about the importance of the Lunar New Year. // Centreville Regional Library: 14200 St. Germain Drive, Centreville; 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Free

Chinese Dance Workshop

Another performance by Xuejuan Dance Ensemble, this event will include a short dance lesson. Learn about China’s different ethnic groups and enjoy the show. // Herndon Fortnightly Library: 768 Center St., Herndon; 2-3 p.m.; Free
