In 1993 many of us were humming to the baritone voice behind the popular “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” song from Crash Test Dummies. We caught up with the man behind the voice, Brad Roberts, before he takes the stage at Jammin’ Java this month as part of his solo tour.
Can you tell me a little bit about your latest projects?
I’ve been busy doing things other than music lately. This’ll be the first time I’ve been touring since I last put out a record five years ago. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road. I missed it after a while.
What have you had the opportunity to explore during your hiatus?
My two main interests right now are literary theory and yoga, both teaching and practice.
What do you hope to get out of your coming performances?
I’m touring on a much smaller scale than I used to do. It’s much more enjoyable, and I really enjoy playing at smaller venues as well. At a certain point, when it gets so big you can’t see the audience members, it becomes sort of alienating.
If you had to address fans who saw you on the calendar for this event and were thinking about maybe attending, what would you say?
Well, it’s just myself and one other guitar player, so it’s a very intimate show. A lot of the show is about my communication with the audience, as well as the music itself. The chat between songs is more significant than it would have been at a lot of other shows. We’ll do songs from the entire history of our catalog.
