A year’s worth of blood, sweat and fabric shears from the Marymount Fashion Department have gone into this year’s Portfolio in Motion. This years fashion show takes place at the Rose Benté Lee Center and will have a special Thursday night show with Marymount’s  Designer of the Year, Jhane Barnes will give advice to these fledgling designers.

Thursday’s $100 premiere starts off at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception  at the Verizon Gym and an opportunity for photographs with Barnes. At 8 p.m. in the Rec Gym, the runway lights up, and Marymount students strut down the runway wearing the latest designs from Marymount students and alumni. There will also be shows without Barnes on May 2 & 3 for $20.

This three-day show takes intense collaboration between the Fashion Marketing and Fashion Design programs at Marymount.

“It’s a year long project,” said Laurie Callahan, director of public relations for Marymount. “On the Fashion Merchandising side they’re preparing to put on the show, deciding the theme.”

Everything in the show production is done by the FM students, and all of the fashions that walk the runway are juried designs by our fashion design students.

Nothing is off the table as Portfolio in Motion creates garments that cover all aspects of the modern world, with evening-wear, casual and even features attire for Redskins fans on game-day.

Portfolio in Motion was first established in the Marymount lexicon in 1989, and has served as the for students to have their designs featured since.

“All seniors show their (fashion) lines, and the rest of the garments are also juried from underclassmen who have submitted garments and had them accepted into the show,” said Callahan.

In recent years, alumni have been participating as well, and this year, Syla swimwear by alumna Sylvie Cachay will be featured in tribute to the designer who died in 2010. Portfolio in Motion represents the fashion students’ hard work, dedication to an art form, and creativity.
