Don’t Miss Virginia’s Tax-Free Weekend

The three-day sales tax holiday starts on Friday.

By Debbie Williams August 4, 2026 at 6:00 am

Mark your calendars: Virginia’s next tax-free weekend is August 7 to 9. You can save on school supplies, clothing, appliances, and more. Tax-free shopping begins on Friday at 12:01 a.m. and ends on Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

The sales tax holiday includes three categories of qualified items: school supplies and clothing; hurricane and emergency preparedness products; and Energy Star and WaterSense labeled appliances.

You can take advantage of both in-store purchases and online shopping during this holiday.

School Supplies and Clothing

You can score tax-free purchases for school supplies that cost $20 or less per item and clothing and footwear that cost $100 or less per item. Qualifying school supplies include backpacks, notebooks, stationery, and cleaning supplies. Exceptions include recreational equipment, handbags, and cosmetics.

Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Products

Emergency tools and appliances that qualify include flashlights, batteries, and portable generators that cost $1,000 or less per item. Specified hurricane preparedness items such as bottled water, and first aid kits are also eligible.

Energy Star and WaterSense Items

Qualifying products purchased for noncommercial home or personal use that cost $2,500 or less per item and include the Energy Star and WaterSense labels will not be taxed. Refrigerators, ceiling fans, and light bulbs with the Energy Star label are also eligible. The sale also includes WaterSense products including faucets, showerheads, and landscape irrigation controllers.

Detailed lists of qualifying items and more information can be found in the Sales Tax Holiday Guidelines.
