Head to These Old-Fashioned Virginia General Stores for a Little Bit of Everything

Get local wine, fresh produce, or hand-scooped ice cream in these nostalgic stores.

By Priya Konings May 30, 2025 at 7:00 am

Nostalgic for a time when life was just slower and simpler? Consider visiting one of Virginia’s old-fashioned general stores, which provide the perfect gateway to step back in time. Full of vintage finds, local flavors, and a glimpse into the town’s heritage, these charming establishments offer more than just goods — they provide community.

The Bluemont Store

This general store boasts “Old Time Virginia hospitality,” and it certainly delivers on that promise. With a story that begins in the 1840s, this memorable shop serves old-world warmth with a side of history to anyone who visits. After stocking up on your milk, eggs, and oysters, order a hand-dipped ice cream and spend the afternoon on the store’s welcoming porch, complete with picnic tables and trees for shade. 33715 Snickersville Tpk., Bluemont

Clifton General Store

Charming and homey are the best words to describe this sweet general store and pub, chock-full of everything from your favorite candy bar to local Virginia wines. Made-to-order breakfast, lunch, and dinner are also available, with dishes like breakfast wraps, mozzarella sticks, and burgers. Come by to get your groceries for the week and stay for an order of warm Bavarian pretzels and a cold beer. 7140 Main St., Clifton

Colvin Run Mill General Store

With its 200-year-old mill, this general store offers a true opportunity to experience history. You can purchase stone-ground grains, such as cornmeal and flour, produced at the working gristmill, along with other everyday shopping items. The store is located in picturesque Colvin Mill Run, a historic site with spots for picnicking and hiking. 10017 Colvin Run Rd., Great Falls

The Corner Store

The Corner Store opened in Waterford, a National Historic Landmark, in 2019. The venue embraces and exudes everything you expect from a good ol’ general store: friendly staff, locally handmade goods for the home and garden, and made-from-scratch food. The menu changes weekly and includes seasonal gems like asparagus soup, a spring quiche, and a grazing board with cheese, hummus, dates, and olives. Come by for happy hour on Fridays, when local wine- and beer-makers are often present to pour glasses of their favorite beverages. 40183 Main St. Waterford

Philomont General Store

Whether you live in the wine and hunt country of Virginia’s Piedmont or you’re just driving through, make a stop at the Philmont General Store. With its friendly owners and bevy of home goods — including standard items like crackers, milk, and eggs, plus local knick-knacks — you will find yourself wanting to linger at this small spot for hours. 36550 Philomont Rd., Philomont
