When you head out the door on Black Friday to shop at Tysons Corner Center, the Leesburg Premium Outlets, or Dulles Town Center, you will be among the 182 million nationwide planning to shop from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, a survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics finds.
The number of people planning to shop in-store or online is 15.7 million higher than last year, and the highest number since the DC-based association started tracking data in 2017.
Sixty-one percent said their top reason for shopping over the holiday weekend is that the deals are too good to pass up. Twenty-eight percent said it was a tradition.
The most popular day to shop continues to be Black Friday, with 130.7 million or 72 percent planning to shell out money nationwide. That’s up from 69 percent last year.
In Northern Virginia, several of the malls will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday for shoppers. See the hours below. In Old Town Alexandria, a number of businesses are participating in Plaid Friday, beginning at 6 a.m. Places like Fairfax Corner will open at 8 a.m. on Small Business Saturday.
For those who haven’t started shopping for the December holidays, you’re falling behind. According to the survey, shoppers have finished one-quarter of their holiday purchases.
“More than 40 percent of shoppers say they took advantage of retailers’ October sales to shop specifically for holiday gifts, décor and other seasonal items,” said Phil Rist, executive vice president of strategy with Prosper Insights & Analytics.
The national survey conducted November 1–6 questioned 8,424 adults and has a margin of error of 1.1 percentage points.
