The Northern Virginia region could soon see air-quality impacts from wildfires raging in Minnesota and Ontario.
According to the Associated Press, more than 100 wildfires are burning in Canada, and winds are carrying the smoke southeast. On Wednesday, warnings of unhealthy air conditions extended from Minnesota through Toronto and into New York.
According to Capital Weather, smoke began to arrive in the DC area on Tuesday in low concentrations, but it remained high enough in the atmosphere that impacts were minimal. Capital Weather said the “period of greatest concern” in the area will be late Thursday night into Friday.
During that time, residents may experience reduced air quality, a smoky odor, cooler temperatures, and may see more vivid sunrises and sunsets.
AccuWeather lists current air quality in DC as “poor,” meaning that there is a high level of pollution and the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups.
On Friday, AccuWeather predicts the air quality will reach “unhealthy” status. ” Health effects can be immediately felt by sensitive groups. Healthy individuals may experience difficulty breathing and throat irritation with prolonged exposure. Limit outdoor activity,” it says.
