A local soccer coach has been arrested and charged with scamming parents out of nearly $60,000.
According to Fairfax County Police Department, Ahmed Mohamed, 31, of Fairfax, advertised a travel summer camp in Italy. He then collected money from victims under the false pretense of promised travel, camp arrangements, and lodging.
FCPD said Mohamed targeted several of the victims through his employment with the Alexandria Soccer Association. The association said it is cooperating with the investigation and no longer employs Mohamed, ALXNow reported.
FCPD said it has identified 13 separate scam victims, and that each lost between $2,000 and $12,000. Current total losses are estimated at nearly $60,000.
On June 30, Mohamed was arrested and charged with 13 counts of embezzlement and 13 counts of computer fraud. He was released on his own recognizance.
