Smithsonian Reopens Two Iconic Buildings for America250

The Smithsonian Castle and the Arts and Industries Building will both welcome visitors this summer.

DC is pulling out all the stops for America250, and the Smithsonian is at the heart of the action. To help celebrate the country’s monumental birthday, the Smithsonian is reopening two of its iconic landmarks to the public: the Castle and the Arts and Industries Building.

Smithsonian Castle

Completed in 1855, the Castle is the Smithsonian’s oldest building. It originally housed the Institution’s first museum, library, and administrative offices.

It will reopen on May 22 following a closure for major renovations that began in 2023. Renovations will be temporarily paused to allow public access through September 7.

Visitors can explore the restored Great Hall, where interpretive displays trace the Castle’s history and restoration. The Castle will also host American Aspirations from June 2 to July 26. Highlights include the desk on which Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, a flight suit worn by Amelia Earhart, and a model of the Statue of Liberty by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.

Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building

The Arts and Industries Building will reopen for regular public hours for the first time since 2004. It will open on June 16 and will also stay open through September 7. Built in 1881, it is the Smithsonian’s second‑oldest building.

Guests can view Voices and Votes: Exploring Democracy Across America, a special edition of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street traveling exhibition. It explores civic participation and includes displays highlighting handmade works from past Smithsonian Folklife Festivals.

On July 25, the Arts and Industries Building will also host a Family Day celebration. It will include music and dance performances and historical reenactors.

Smithsonian National Carousel

Located in front of the Arts and Industries Building, the Smithsonian National Carousel also returned to permanent operation on April 24 following an extensive restoration. Built in 1947, the carousel first operated at Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Baltimore. It was installed on the National Mall in 1981 and closed for renovations in November 2023.

The carousel operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Rides are $6 per person and do not require advance reservations.
