Manassas Regional Airport Is Getting a New Name

City leaders say the name will help better position the airport as it prepares to offer commercial service.

Manassas Regional Airport is preparing to offer commercial airline service. To help better brand the airport ahead of the change, it will likely also be getting a new name.

Manassas City Council members voted unanimously Monday on a resolution to change the name to Washington Manassas Airport.

According to the resolution, “The proposed change is intended to improve regional recognition and strengthen the airport’s market positioning within the Washington metropolitan area. It would also support long-term economic development objectives and enhance airline outreach and recruitment efforts as the airport transitions from a general aviation facility to a commercial service airport.”

The resolution cited other airports that have adopted metropolitan names “to improve credibility and clarity with airline network planners and marketing teams.” Examples given included Washington Dulles International Airport, Chicago Executive Airport, and Orlando Sanford International Airport.

The airport’s dedicated airfield would remain the Harry P. Davis Field. Its current FAA location identifier — HEF — would also stay the same.

The estimated cost to replace existing airport signage is $500,000, including materials, design, and installation.

The name change is now subject to approval by the Federal Aviation Administration.
