$69M Lincoln Memorial Undercroft Project Nears Completion

Visitors can soon see exhibits and peek into the structure below the memorial.

A renovation project to open the space below the Lincoln Memorial to visitors is expected to wrap up this summer, according to the National Mall and Memorial Parks (NMMP). The completion of the project will coincide with DC’s plans to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

“With a few finishing touches left, we’re excited to show off this iconic American memorial,” NMMP said in a social media post. An exact opening date has yet to be announced.

The $69 million undercroft project began in 2023, with the goal to create 15,000 square feet of exhibit space underneath the memorial. There, visitors will be able to view exhibits and multi-media presentations about the creation and history of the memorial.

“The undercroft of the Lincoln Memorial, long hidden from public view, offers a fascinating setting to learn more about America’s 16th president and the memorial that honors him,” Jeff Reinbold, NMMP superintendent, said in a 2023 news release.

In addition to the visitor facilities, there will be floor-to-ceiling windows that let guests peek into the undercroft of the Lincoln Memorial. This cavernous space below the memorial is filled with a grid of concrete columns that support the structure. There will be an immersive theater presentation, projecting images of historic events onto the columns.

The project also includes new bathrooms, a larger bookstore, and a refurbished elevator.

Because the elevator is now up and running, the temporary accessibility ramp has been removed from the exterior of the memorial.
