Stargazers, take note. The Observatory Park at Turner Farm in Great Falls has been named an Urban Night Sky Place (UNSP). The designation by DarkSky International recognizes Fairfax County Park Authority’s efforts to protect the night sky through responsible lighting as well as astronomy and light pollution education initiatives.
“Earning Urban Night Sky Place certification so close to Washington, DC, reflects the outstanding commitment of local advocates who understand that meaningful dark sky protection is possible even in highly developed communities. … Their work shows how science, policy, and community collaboration can come together to protect the night sky, inspire public engagement, and pave the way for broader dark sky conservation even in developed areas,” Amber Harrison, International Dark Sky Places program manager, said in a statement.
Lighting Management Plan
The help earn the designation, the Observatory Park implemented a comprehensive outdoor lighting management plan. The plan focused on low-light levels that minimized light pollution while maintaining safety. In addition, a 2023 Fairfax County special ordinance established enhanced lighting protections within a half-mile perimeter of the observatory.
Education and Outreach
FCPA education and outreach initiatives also played a key role in obtaining the designation. The FCPA “Dark Skies Campaign,” including Lights Out initiatives, helped bring awareness to the effects of light pollution on the environment.
The park authority also offers classroom-based education and partners with the Analemma Society, Dark Sky Friends, and the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital to help strengthen community engagement and foster long-term support for night sky protection.
