Virginia airports will receive $48,329,251 in federal funding to support infrastructure improvements, Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner announced. These funds are allocated by the Federal Aviation Administration and will be spread throughout 18 airports.
Funding for Local Airport Improvements
Among those receiving funding, Dulles International Airport will get $6.8 million to reconstruct taxiways — the second-largest allocation of the funding. The airport is in the midst of some significant improvement projects. It recently published a new master plan and is working on opening a new 14-gate concourse.
Other projects include $7.2 million for lighting and taxiway shifts at Winchester Regional Airport. And $5.2 million for runway rehabilitation at Virginia Highlands Airport. Leesburg Executive Airport will get $4.9 million for runway rehabilitation. Reagan National Airport was not included.
Federal Funding Boost
The funds come through the Airport Infrastructure Grants and the Airport Improvement Program, which Kaine and Warner said were made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“These investments will help ensure that our airports are a safe, reliable engine of connectivity and economic growth for travelers and communities around the Commonwealth,” Kaine and Warner said in a joint statement. “We’re going to keep doing all that we can to bring additional infrastructure investments to Virginia, and to reauthorize the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that makes many of them possible.”
This funding is the latest in a recent wave of federal funds for airports in the commonwealth. Last month, the senators announced more than $21 million in federal funding for improvements at 10 airports across Virginia. Days later, they added an additional $15.5 million to six airports, including $1 million each to Leesburg Executive Airport and Manassas Regional Airport.
In October 2024, they rolled out nearly $57 million for improvements to Dulles, Norfolk International, and Richmond International.
