Fairfax County residents will soon have an opportunity to vote for a new representative for the state’s 11th Congressional District. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued a writ of election on June 3 scheduling a special election for September 9. The election will fill the seat vacated by Gerry Connolly, who died on May 21.

On April 28, Connolly announced he was stepping down from some Congressional duties and not seeking re-election due to his battle with cancer of the esophagus. Since the announcement, several candidates launched bids for the open seat. They include:

  • Josh Aisen
  • Candice Bennett
  • Leo Martínez
  • Stella Pekarsky
  • Amy Roma
  • Irene Shin
  • Mike Van Meter
  • James Walkinshaw

The last day for a candidate to file paperwork to appear on the ballot is July 11.
