This Northern Virginia Town Is the Richest in the State

The locations were chosen based on median annual income.

A small pocket of land in southern Fairfax County has been named the wealthiest area in Virginia. GOBankingRates analyzed 2023 U.S. Census Bureau income data in locations with 500 to 15,000 households (Alaska wasn’t included because it doesn’t have enough data). It named South Run as the “richest small town” in Virginia.

South Run is not technically a town, but rather a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the total area of the South Run CDP is only 2.53 square miles; it has a population of around 2,550 and about 2,000 households.

The region is bordered by Burke Lake Park to the northwest and Burke to the north. South Run’s borders are formed by the Fairfax County Parkway to the north, Hooes Road to the south, and Ox Road to the southwest. The area of Burke was recently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the best place to live in Virginia.

GOBankingRates reported that South Run has a median income of $238,456, which is considerably higher than the statewide median income of $87,249 in 2023. According to Redfin, the median price of a home sold in the area in April was $1.12 million.

According to GOBankingRates, these are the top five wealthiest small towns in the country:

  • Orinda, California (median income $248,984)
  • Noroton, Connecticut (median income $248,125)
  • Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania (median income $247,930)
  • University Park, Texas ($247,045)
  • Flower Hill, New York ($246,533)
