Six Flags America and the Hurricane Harbor water park in Bowie, Maryland, will permanently close after the 2025 season. The final operating day will be November 2 for Six Flags and September 7 for Hurricane Harbor.
The decision was because the parks were “not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” Six Flags president and CEO Richard Zimmerman said in a news release. The company will market the 500 acres of property from the two parks for redevelopment. The park employs about 70 full-time associates; eligible employees will receive “severance and other benefits.”
This decision happened after Six Flags’ parent company merged with Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. in 2024, which put Kings Dominion and Six Flags under the same brand portfolio, The Washington Business Journal reported. The two parks are only about 100 miles apart.
And this isn’t the only major business shake-up happening in this part of Maryland. This news comes shortly after the announcement that the Washington Commanders will relocate their stadium from its current site in Landover — just minutes away from the Six Flags site — to the RFK stadium in Washington, DC.
2025 Season
Six Flags opened for the season on April 12, and Hurricane Harbor will open May 24. The two parks will remain open through the remainder of the season. All 2025 season passes and tickets will still be valid.
There are several events at the park for the remainder of the season. These include the Viva la Fiesta festival May 31 to June 29 and Star-Spangled Nights on July 4 and 5.
“Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor have been an important part of the local community, and this final season will be an opportunity to celebrate the decades of fun that guests have enjoyed at the property,” Zimmerman said.
