NBC4 news anchor Tony Perkins is back at the anchor desk after weeks of recovery from surgery for prostate cancer.
Perkins, who has been a reporter, weatherman, host, and news anchor in the DC area for more than 30 years, announced in September that his prostate cancer had advanced. He received the initial diagnosis in 2022.
He shared on January 13 that his surgery had gone well and, after a period of recovery, he returned on air today.
“The good news is I am cancer-free at this point,” Perkins said. “I do have to continue to monitor blood tests just to make sure that stays the case. I had an amazing team that took care of me.”
He went on to thank Dr. Jonathan Hwang, chair of urology, urologic oncology, and robotic prostatectomy at MedStar Washington Hospital Center; Nefi Quintero, the nursing director of the O.R.; and urologist Dr. Ed Dunne, who was the first to diagnose Perkins.
He also thanked all of the operating room staff and nurses at the hospital, his wife, and “the NBC4 News family” for their support, prayers, and messages on social media.
When sharing his diagnosis in September, Perkins stressed the importance of regular physicals and screenings for prostate cancer.
