Two Virginia state troopers rescued a woman whose vehicle ended up in a retention pond off eastbound Interstate 66 in Fairfax County Sunday night.
Troopers Alexander King and Brady Fore responded at 9:40 p.m. to Exit 60/Route 123 and found the SUV submerged with the driver inside.
The vehicle had gone through a fence before ending up in the retention pond. Then it started sinking. When the troopers got to it, the water had reached the driver’s door and had filled the back seat and trunk, King told NBC4.
“It was a big shock to us because we didn’t know that there were ponds deep enough for cars to submerge on the side of 66,” King told NBC4.
The troopers managed to get the 40-year-old woman out of the vehicle through the sunroof, state police said in a news release.
State police said the woman was taken to an area hospital to be checked out. Because of the cold temperatures, EMS also evaluated the troopers.
The crash remains under investigation, police said.
