Former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn on Wednesday announced plans to run for the 10th Congressional District next year, rather than for governor in 2025.
Rep. Jennifer Wexton, a Democrat, currently holds that seat. She won’t run for reelection to a fourth term because she has Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare neurological disorder that has no cure.
“In recent weeks, I have heard from many Democrats across Virginia’s 10th Congressional District urging me to keep serving and to run for this seat. After careful consideration I have decided to do just that,” Filler-Corn said.
Filler-Corn has served in the Virginia General Assembly since 2010. She became the first woman and first Jewish individual to be speaker.
“As a Jewish American, I have deeply felt the tragedies of the past few weeks. Congress has been left rudderless at a time of global uncertainty. The American people and our allies abroad deserve better than this,” Filler-Corn said.
The Democrat from Fairfax County and friend of Wexton’s said Congress needs fearless and effective leaders like Wexton.
“VA-10 deserves someone in Washington who can get to work on day one to take on the chaos and extremism that threatens our very way of life. My experience and record show that I can get the job done,” Filler-Corn said.
Back in March, Filler-Corn said she would not run for reelection. She had been considering a run for governor in 2025.
