Safety Reminders: Kids in School and Speed Cameras in Operation

Find out when Alexandria’s newest speed cameras will be fully operational.

By Colleen Kelleher August 21, 2023 at 11:28 am

As hundreds of thousands of NoVA students returned to school Monday and more expected to return later this week and early next week, area police departments are reminding you to pay attention and to watch for new speed cameras.

Across the region, you will see additional traffic in around around schools.

“The Prince William County Police Department is asking for patience and for residents to slow down, remain calm, and obey the direction of the school crossing guards. The safety of everyone is our number one priority,” the department said in a news release.

While drivers need to pack their patience, Fairfax County police urge parents to make sure children walk in groups, dress in bright or reflective clothing, and use crosswalks and signals.

In Alexandria, new speed cameras are in place near the following schools:

  • Francis Hammond Middle School — Seminary Road, between Kenmore Avenue and North Jordan Street
  • John Adams Elementary School and Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School — North Beauregard Street, between North Highview Lane and Reading Avenue
  • George Washington Middle School — Mount Vernon Avenue, between Braddock Road and Luray Avenue

The city said that each school zone is about a quarter-mile long with a 15 mph speed limit when the school signs are flashing. Signs are posted to warn you about the zones.

Drivers will have a warning period until the cameras are fully live on September 18. Violators could face fines up to $100.

Students in Fairfax and Prince William counties, as well as Manassas City, Manassas Park, and Alexandria, went back to class Monday. Stafford and Spotsylvania counties went back to class earlier this month.

Loudoun County students head back on Thursday, and Arlington County students on Monday, August 28.
