More changes are coming to the I-66 West entrance ramp at Nutley St., located by the Vienna Metro Station, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Weather permitting, the changes are expected to begin in the early morning on April 14.
Drivers heading north or southbound on Nutley St. toward the I-66 West ramp will use new turn lanes and a traffic signal to reach the temporary ramp, and the current entrances to reach the westbound route will both close.
VDOT says the following new traffic patterns should be expected: From southbound Nutley St., drivers will reach the new ramp (that will merge into the current loop ramp from northbound Nutley St.) to I-66 West by turning left at the traffic signal. From northbound Nutley St., drivers will continue a short distance beyond the current entrance to the loop ramp, then turn right at the traffic signal to reach the ramp. Drivers coming from northbound Nutley St. should be aware of merging traffic on the ramp coming from the south.
The two travel lanes on Nutley St. will remain active through the interchange, but drivers can expect lane closures to make the changes happen.
From April 13 to April 14, the northbound ramp to I-66 West will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers will be directed to make a U-turn and enter the ramp from southbound Nutley St. The ramps from the highway to Nutley St. will also be closed, and drivers are advised to make an exit at the metro station, then follow signs for detour.
Once completed, the new Nutley St. Interchange will feature a double roundabout and new ramps for express lanes. The project is set to provide safer, more efficient travel for those traveling to and from I-66 and improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians on Nutley St.
