President George H.W. Bush funeral events start Monday; Amendment proposed to deal with gerrymandering

Former President George H.W. Bush, who passed away over the weekend, will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda from Monday afternoon to Wednesday morning. The public will be allowed in starting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening.

In an effort to solve issues of gerrymandering, a Virginia constitutional amendment is being proposed that would have an independent commission, rather than the General Assembly, redraw the state’s legislative districts after the 2020 census.

Three Northern Virginia men have been charged with defrauding the Department of Defense in $9 billion worth of contracts. Abdul Huda Farouki, Mazen Farouki and Salah Maarouf are executives for defense contractor Anham FZCO and were awarded an $8 billion contract to provide supplies to troops in Afghanistan in 2012. All three men pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Responding to reports of shots fired, an Alexandria police officer shot a suspect Sunday afternoon. The suspect was reported to have a firearm, and is being treated for serious injuries. The officer was not injured.
