Hurricane Florence downgraded to Category 2, impact on NoVA updated; Fairfax Student Union calls out Robinson’s homecoming rule

Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm as it expects to make landfall in the Carolinas Thursday, though winds could still reach 110 mph. The NoVA area is expected to get some modest rainfall, with potential for more substantial rain early next week.

The Fairfax County Public School Student Union is accusing Robinson Secondary School leaders of discrimination for denying two male students the opportunity to be selected together as homecoming kings.

A two-alarm blaze went off at an Alexandria high-rise apartment Wednesday night. The fire occurred on the 12th floor at the Carydale East apartments in the 2700 block of Duke Street near Telegraph Road, displacing four adults and one child. The cause of the fire is still unknown, according to fire officials.

In a 10-0 vote, Arlington Planning Commission members recommended that County Board members take no action on a proposal to expand Virginia Hospital Center. The hope is that this will allow for more time for the hospital, county officials and critics to offer additional refinements to the plan.

Metro is proposing increased fares during major events. The agency could start charging peak fares for riders on days when extra service is run to carry large crowds, like the Fourth of July and events like the Women’s March and March for Our Lives.

Kenmore Middle School was one of five schools across the nation selected for the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools National Recognition Program. The school met the standards for the program, which include providing unified sports for students with and without disabilities.
