How much does an inch mean to you? It may be a small unit on a long ruler, but in the art at Torpedo Factory Art Center’s “5×5(x5)” exhibition, every inch matters. Each work of art in this biannual showcase is at most five inches long on any side. Displayed in the art center’s Target Gallery, this exhibition runs through January 18, featuring paintings, photographs, sculptures and more from 35 artists nationwide.
The works of art were selected by guest juror Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell, a curator, arts manager and founder of the web resource Curatorally. Although “5×5(x5)” is not themed, Bryant-Greenwell recognized a trend among the varied works of art submitted to her.
“What I was seeing was a very deliberate exploration of zeitgeist. All of the work is very timely and contemporary and very meaningful.”
The examination of zeitgeist—meaning the spirit of a time—in each of these works can be seen in their pop culture references and familiar imagery. “I tried to think about the art gallery visitor,” says Bryant-Greenwell, who selected works of art that would resonate with a contemporary audience. With art pieces that evoke both the present and the past altogether, “5×5(x5)” is a display to be enjoyed and contemplated across ages. —Bailey Lucero-Carter
