Roggenart European Bakery Opens in Arlington

This is the family-owned company’s first Northern Virginia location.

By Olga Boikess March 26, 2024 at 1:54 pm

Northern Virginians may have already discovered Roggenart European Bakery, Bistro & Café’s flaky croissants, fruit-filled pastries, hearty breads, and fresh sandwiches at local farmers markets. Now, these treats — along with quality soups, coffees, and teas — can be enjoyed in an inviting café/bakery on a tree-lined plaza near the Ballston Metro.

The European-inspired bakery is a family-owned operation with four Maryland locations. It takes pride in made-from-scratch menu items and the use of quality ingredients like rich European butter. Customers will have trouble choosing from the counter display of baked goods. There are more than two dozen sweet and savory options including plain and filled croissants, Danish pastries, fruit tarts, phyllo-based specialties like spanakopita, and giant pretzels.

Hefty egg sandwiches, built on its pillowy croissants, and flavor-packed omelets are available all day. Cast-iron pressed sandwiches on housemade sourdough bread include three-cheese grilled cheese, roast beef, roasted red pepper and chicken pesto, and grilled Reuben. There are also salads and seasonal soups.

Once customers make those tough decisions, they’re welcome to seat themselves in comfy leather chairs and at indoor and outdoor café tables, or perch at a tucked-away, window-side counter. The spacious L-shaped café offers a civilized backdrop for a coffee break or casual meeting.
