If your summer obsession was the latest season of Stranger Things, then you’ll want to keep reading. Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is combining your favorite TV show with sweet treats to create the ultimate spooky snack. For a limited time, the beloved shop is offering Stranger Things-themed doughnuts to celebrate the season.
Through the end of October, Astro’s Falls Church and Washington, DC, locations will be selling half-dozen boxes with two “Demogorgon” doughnuts, two “Breakfast for Eleven” doughnuts, an “Upside-Down” doughnut, and “Holly Jolly” doughnut. Each half-dozen box is $30. And after making a trip to Falls Church this past weekend, we can tell you they are definitely worth the money and drive.
After stumbling across these spooky designs on Instagram last week, I put in an order to pick them up on Sunday morning. I immediately opened the box once I got to my car and these doughnuts didn’t disappoint. My six doughy delicacies looked just as they advertised on social media. If I didn’t have to wait until I got home to take pictures of these designs, I definitely would’ve tried all four flavors right in the parking lot.
After the hour drive home, I quickly dug into the box. First on my plate was the “Holly Jolly” doughnut. The vanilla-glazed treat depicts the show’s iconic Christmas lights from season one with mini M&M’s and chocolate icing. The simple design and flavor was the perfect way to kick off the taste test.
Next, was a bite from “Breakfast for Eleven.” If you’ve seen the show, you know the supernatural teen loves Eggos, and she would probably love this doughnut too. This creation features maple glaze, chopped bacon, and a mini Eggo on top. Of the four, the sweet and savory combo of this treat was definitely my favorite.
For the third bite, I traversed to the Upside Down with the rich chocolate baked good. Served upside down (those that get, get it), the moist cake doughnut is topped with a gray cinnamon-honey glaze, Oreo crumbles, and black sugar. This variation was the sweetest of the four, but worth every single bite.
Last but not least was the over-the-top Demogorgon design. Filled with raspberry jam, the square doughnut is topped with red apple cider glaze and a fresh strawberry demogorgon. While I’m not a fan of fruity flavors, this doughnut impressed my taste buds and will probably be everyone’s favorite out of all of the specialty flavors.
If you’re looking for some strange doughnuts or want to take a non-scary trip to the Upside Down by picking up a box of these specialty doughnuts, don’t expect to drop in and find these behind the counter. If you want to snag a box, you’ll need to put in an online order at least 24 hours in advance. And don’t wait! The limited-time designs will be gone before you know it.
