I’m not the only person obsessed with food in my family. One of my brothers is a chef. The other started our school’s Pizza Club. It involved Friday jaunts to all the pizzerias in town, grading each one. Every year, Pizza Post was ultimately the winner.
Why does this matter to you? Because our town was half an hour outside New York City. When I say that the pizza at Teddy’s Brooklyn Style Pizza in Middleburg reminds me very much of Pizza Post in Greenwich, CT, this should be a rallying cry. I’ve found New York-style pies that really satisfy in a tony suburb not unlike my hometown.
Owner Teddy Vicidomini has serious pizza cred. He and brother Anthony grew up working at their Neapolitan father’s Brooklyn pizzeria. Now they’re tossing pies like they learned to as kids. And it shows.
There are three small outdoor tables at which to enjoy the hot, stretchy cheese on the spot, before the ample grease coagulates. Luckily, I scored one on a hot but breezy day. Somehow, receiving the table-spanning pizza box was more exciting than much of the fine dining I’ve recently experienced. Perhaps it’s because the meal was objectively better in its own right than most of that fussy fare.
The tangy sauce is replete with oregano and spread to the very outer edges of the crust. That base? Chewy and eminently foldable, though the bones are a tad stiffer than my ideal. This is my only complaint about the otherwise impeccable pie.
When my pizza-preoccupied brother visits town, I know exactly where I’m taking him, but I suspect I’ll make many more trips to Teddy’s before then. 9 E. Federal St., Middleburg
