Tava Fry opened in Ashburn in July. The goal? To bring halal Indian street food to the region. Now, before the end of the year, Herndon residents can also expect to pick up quick and casual Mumbai-style bites.
Owner Rick Kerawala previously owned Country Oven (which is still open with different owners) in the Village Center at Dulles, an area that neighbors refer to as Clocktower for its Big Ben-style time keeper. “He loved Herndon so much,” says his son and marketing director Zain Kerawala.
Tava Fry will replace a series of desi pizzerias in a corner slot along the back of the strip center. Most recently, it was briefly Bombay Dock, which opened after Prime Pizza closed. The building is home to several other Indian restaurants, including Tatva Xpress just two doors down. But Zain Kerawala is confident that Tava Fry will differentiate itself. “This is where Indian street food could thrive, but those options weren’t around,” he says. Hours will be 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. to capitalize on late night business from nearby bars.
With a smaller space than in Ashburn, the Herndon Tava Fry will have an abbreviated menu that will be focused solely on street food with none of the curries that are also available at the original location. Those options will include burgers, crispy pizzas, sandwiches and chaat, all with Indian flavors.
Zain Kerawala says that he hopes to be open in Clocktower by the middle of November, though details are still being finalized. // 2443 Centreville Road, Herndon
