August is National Sandwich Month, Here’s Northern Virginia Magazine’s Sandwich Issue

The Sandwich Issue, on newsstands now.

I don’t know when fake food holidays started bombarding Twitter feeds, but it sure is easy to hook a story to them.

The fake holiday overlords declare August as National Sandwich Month. Abiding, we provide you with plenty of coverage in Northern Virginia Magazine’s August issue, on newsstands now.

The issue lists some of my favorite sandwiches from new shops in NoVA (above is Bubba Mike from Alexandria‘s Sweet Fire Donna’s) and helps you build a better sandwich at home with tips on choosing the best cheeses, greens, breads, meats, pickles and fermentables. There’s also an essay from the region’s burger expert, Jody Fellows of the blog Burger Days, on whether or not a burger qualifies a sandwich. Carten Cordell gets thinky on the role the convenient sandwich plays in our everyday lives. And for your lunch time needs, we feature food trucks, still gaining acceptance in Northern Virginia, and their globally inspired sandwiches. (In the jump)

We asked many of Northern Virginia’s biggest chefs where their favorite sandwich is from, but we want to know what you think too. We polled readers on their favorite local sandwich shops. Here’s the top 10. Help us crown the winner.
