There’s just something special about relaxing on the water — whether you’re sipping Aperol spritzes with friends or enjoying a relaxed family meal. Luckily, Northern Virginia offers no shortage of scenic waterfront dining spots to capture these moments. While the sun is shining and dining alfresco is in full swing, carve out time to explore these inviting waterfront restaurants.

Ada’s on the River

Ada’s serves wood-fired modern American dishes in a primo setting on the Potomac. Think custom-aged prime meats, fresh seafood, and signature grilled salads. For an outstanding meal and a front-row seat to the Old Town Alexandria waterfront, ask for a table on the patio. 3 Pioneer Mill Way, Alexandria

Barca Pier & Wine Bar

Barca is set on a repurposed pier of shipping containers and offers Old Town waterfront dining with a touch of Mediterranean flair. Guests can nibble on curated small plates while sipping a crisp wine, all while savoring scenic waterfront dining views of the Potomac. 2 Pioneer Mill Way, Alexandria

Blackwall Hitch

Blackwall Hitch is a staple for seafood lovers in Old Town Alexandria, so get your fix of crabcakes and oysters, all with a heaping helping of waterside dining. The restaurant’s cuisine is seasonally driven, coastally inspired, with locally sourced food and spirits. 5 Cameron St., Alexandria

Vola’s Dockside Grill & Hi‑Tide Lounge

Casual and welcoming, Vola’s is a favorite for informal waterfront meals with a fun crowd. Grab a seat on the patio overlooking the Potomac, order a basket of crispy fried shrimp, and watch the boats glide by at this Old Town hot spot. 101 N. Union St., Alexandria

Jula’s on the Potomac

Upscale but comfortable, Jula’s brings contemporary American fare to a spectacular riverside setting. Whether you’re inside the attractive dining room, bar, or lounge with panoramic views, or dining outside on chef-driven small plates and curated cocktails on the terrace, Jula’s is a place to relax and unwind.  44 Canal Center Plaza, Ste. 401, Alexandria

Kalypso’s Sports Tavern

Overlooking Reston’s Lake Anne, Kalypso’s serves a lively, easy going mix of Greek comfort food and classic bar favorites. The popular restaurant has been a local staple for happy hour and weekend brunches, and its lakeside tables and live music make it a must-visit when you’re at Lake Anne. 1617 Washington Plaza N, Reston

Red’s Table

Nestled along Reston’s Lake Thoreau, Red’s Table offers up modern American plates in a comfortable neighborhood eatery. The wraparound deck overlooking the lake is the perfect spot for a relaxing, waterfront meal. 11150 South Lakes Dr., Reston

Sweetwater Tavern

Set beside a tranquil lake, Sweetwater’s expansive patio offers a scenic backdrop for savory American dishes and house-brewed beers. Grab a seat by the water for a casual family meal or a special date night. Sweetwater’s menu, vibe, and view are the recipe for a memorable visit. 45980 Waterview Plaza, Sterling

Madigan’s Waterfront Seafood Restaurant

Located along the Occoquan River, Madigan’s is a locally owned seafood and steak restaurant. Its riverside deck is ideal for savoring crab cakes, chicken, chowder, and more, all with a relaxing view. The partially covered outdoor patio and tiki bar overlook the water, making it a must for warm summer evenings. 201 Mill St., Occoquan
