Wines from Middleburg, Clifton, Haymarket, and Stafford took spots in the prestigious Virginia Governor’s Cup awards. Barboursville Vineyards, located outside Charlottesville, won the top prize for 2025.

Governor’s Cup judges reviewed more than 600 entries from 140-plus wineries, cideries, and meaderies. The case, which includes the top 12 winners, was announced at a gala in Richmond on Thursday.

Winning Governor’s Cup Wines

Barboursville scored an impressive two wines in the Governor’s Cup case: 2017 Octagon, a red blend; and 2023 Vermentino, a white wine made of 100 percent Vermentino grapes. This 2023 Vermentino was the winner of the Governor’s Cup. This is the sixth time the vineyard has won the award.

Other winners included:

  • Middleburg’s 50 West Vineyards for its 2021 Aldie Heights Cuvée
  • Clifton’s Paradise Springs Winery for its 2023 Cabernet Franc, Brown Bear Vineyard
  • Stafford’s Potomac Point Winery & Vineyards for its 2023 Albarino
  • Haymarket’s The Winery at La Grange for its 2023 Petit Manseng

Gold medal winners in the competition were announced earlier this month. Several Northern Virginia wineries were among the winners. Three NoVA wineries collected three gold medals each: 868 Estate Vineyards in Hillsboro, Breaux Vineyards in Purcellville, and Endhardt Vineyards in Purcellville.
