Long gone are the days of dry, tasteless frozen veggie burgers. Now, we not only live in the times of impossible and beyond burgers, but chefs around the globe have taken it upon themselves to develop innovative, satisfying, housemade veggie burgers to serve in their restaurants.

Here is a list of some of the tastiest and meatiest veggie burgers in and around Northern Virginia that meat-eaters and vegetarians alike will enjoy.

Good Stuff Eatery

The ‘shroom burger at the Crystal City location is locally renowned. Made with a portobello mushroom that is stuffed with Muenster and cheddar cheese, then rolled in panko breadcrumbs and fried, you will be thinking of this burger for days. Tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and pickles add freshness and more crunch, and Good Stuff sauce brings just the right kick. Insider tip: There’s also a veggie burger made with a fried green tomato. 2110 Crystal Dr., Arlington; Terminal B, Reagan National Airport, Arlington

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

It may have steakburger in the name, but Freddy’s has not forgotten about vegetarians. The simple but hearty black bean patty here comes with a slice of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and Thousand Island dressing. Order it as a combo with onion rings and a soda, and don’t forget to try the frozen custard for dessert. Multiple locations

Patsy’s American

Made with two different kinds of grains, brown rice and quinoa, as well as beets and beans, this veggie burger is truly a hearty patty. Topped with juicy tomatoes, Havarti cheese, creamy guacamole, and spicy chipotle mayo, this veggie burger is certainly not lacking in flavor. A crunchy pile of hand-cut fries is served on the side. 8051 Leesburg Pk., Vienna

Ruthie’s All Day

This Southern restaurant serves a meaty quinoa and black bean burger that is piled high with dill pickles, fresh heirloom tomato slices, iceberg lettuce, and spheres of red onion. The sesame bun is smeared with rich vegan mayo; feel free to ask for ketchup and mustard as well. 3411 5th St. S., Arlington

Smashburger

Made with meaty jackfruit and covered with aged Swiss cheese, heaps of sautéed cremini mushrooms, and truffle-infused mayo, the truffle mushroom Swiss burger at Smashburger is a decadent dream. Add avocado and grilled onions for even more richness. There’s also a classic version with American cheese. 5920 Kingstowne Towne Ctr., Ste. 120, Alexandria; Reagan National Airport; 14082 Promenade Commons St., Gainesville
