Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria gained international attention for one of its signature beers. The Optimal Wit won the gold prize in the Belgian-style Witbier category at the World Beer Cup on Wednesday.

The World Beer Cup, hosted by the Brewers Association, is the largest beer competition in the world, according to a news release. At this year’s competition, there were 110 categories covering 172 different styles of beer.

The winners were announced at an awards ceremony in Las Vegas on April 24.

“Each award represents not only exceptional quality but also innovation and creativity, driving the global craft beer industry forward,” said Chris Williams, World Beer Cup competition director. “This year’s winners exemplify the spirit of craftsmanship and ingenuity and showcase the diverse flavors and techniques that make beer an art form.”

The Optimal Wit is “crisp and citrusy with layers of flavor that evolve in the glass,” according to Port City’s website. It contains 100 percent Virginia-grown wheat and a blend of spices including orange peel and coriander.

Founded by Bill and Karen Butcher, Port City opened in Alexandria in 2011. Visitors can stop by its taproom to try beers on tap, tour the brewery, or participate in events, such as fitness events and live music. The brewery is open to children and pets, and it offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

At last year’s World Beer Cup, Port City took home two bronze medals, for the Optimal Wit and the Colossal 2 imperial smoked porter. In 2022, the Downright Pilsner won silver.

Another NoVA-area brewery, Bear Chase Brewing in Bluemont, won silver this year in the German-Style Koelsch category.
