Where to Find the Best Gooey Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Around NoVA

With fillings from Asian pear to house-cured corned beef, these buttery blessings will tempt you to go way beyond a slice of American.

By Jackie DiBartolomeo April 12, 2022 at 7:00 am

April is National Grilled Cheese Month. Though we don’t put too much stock in these made-up food holidays, we think melty cheese between buttery layers of bread is worth celebrating. Pick one up anytime, but don’t miss out on taking part on April 12, National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.

The Big Cheese Truck

Bring the gooey goodness to you with this gourmet food truck focused entirely on cheese. The truck features seasonal grilled cheese sandwiches, from the St. Patrick’s Day Irish Stout to the July 4th Bread White & Blue. This April and May, be sure to try out the Cherry Blossom, a combo of chèvre and cherry preserves. Check the truck’s calendar to see when it will be near you. Locations vary

Chadwicks

Head to Chadwicks to get a grilled cheese that will have your mouth watering. Called the F.G.T’ Grilled Cheese, this sandwich is made with fried green tomato, house pimento cheese, and pickled red onion on a brioche bun. The F.G.T is so good it’s “road trip worthy,” according to one guest. 203 Strand St., Alexandria

Cheesetique

This duo of restaurants has a wide variety of grilled cheeses to choose from. Try out the Sassy Goat, made with fresh chèvre, bacon, and avocado, or the Brie & Pearsciutto, featuring Asian pears and crisped prosciutto.  Choose a side of mixed greens or the award-winning Mac ‘N Cheesetique. 2411 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria; 4024 Campbell Ave., Arlington

GCDC Grilled Cheese Bar

As D.C.’s only grilled cheese bar, this restaurant offers a customizable selection of grilled cheeses, mac and cheeses, and quesadillas. The restaurant offers classic recipes, from a Reuben grilled cheese to a pesto turkey melt, as well as more unique sandwiches. Take, for example, the Carolina BBQ sandwich, which combines jalapenos, roast pork, and mac and cheese. 1730 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC

Odd BBQ

This Chantilly meat palace features a wide variety of barbecue-style grilled cheese options, as well as vegetarian sandwiches. Check out the pork and kimchi grilled cheese, a chopped pork, kimchi, and mustard fusion, flavored with Korean spicy barbecue sauce. Or, if you’re looking to tone down the heat, go with the corned beef grilled cheese, featuring housemade cured brisket, a three-cheese combo, and Russian dressing. 4520 Daly Dr., Chantilly

Purcellville Eats

Searching for a wide variety of grilled cheeses? Look no further than this spot. While offering classic grilled cheese options, the restaurant also has some unique sandwiches; try out the California Smash, which boasts Brie, turkey, and fig jam on sourdough. Soon, the eatery will be introducing their Lobstah Griller, a lobster and cheese roll with some good old-fashioned Maryland Old Bay Seasoning. 609-U E. Main St., Purcellville

Spacebar

Enjoy a unique selection of grilled cheeses as you sip on craft beer at this casual Falls Church spot. Highlights include the Andromeda Melt, a bacon, red pepper, and mozzarella mix, and the Granny Smith, which combines smoked Gouda and Havarti with thinly sliced green apples. Customizable grilled cheeses are also available. 709 W. Broad St., Falls Church
