You can now go to summer camp with your kids in Virginia

Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg is hosting “Family Camp” as a response to the cancellation of the traditional summer camp experience this year.

When reading the descriptions of local summer camps, filled with their daily activities of archery, horse riding, swimming and more, you might have a pang of jealousy. Your child gets to fill their days with sun-filled memories, and your nostalgic days of summer seem to have faded.

But Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg wants to change that. After the global pandemic dampened the camp’s plans to host children for the traditional summer camp experience, the organization decided to offer an alternative: Family Camp.

Kicking off on Sunday, July 12 (and being held weekly through Sunday, Aug. 23), Family Camp offers the opportunity to reconnect with your family away from your home on the 300-acre property of Camp Horizons.

Each week, the camp will welcome families with flexible activity schedules, fresh-cooked meals and individual cabin rentals. For additional fun, family campers can add on equestrian packages and off-site trips too. Another plus? You don’t even have to have kids to attend family camp!

That’s right, everyone is welcome, and your “family” can be made up of whomever you want it to be. According to the website, all ages and stages can enjoy camp, so bring your young and your old, your friends and your family to enjoy a half-week, full-week or weekend of camp in Virginia.

Daily activities include arts and crafts, swimming in the pool and nearby lake, archery and climbing, exploring nature and gardening and learning essential skills such as how to build a fire and more. Add-ons include equestrian trail rides, off-site canoeing, off-site tubing and more.

All meals will be provided, and although the camp prefers buffet style and serving in the dining hall, all meals will be prepared family-style to be enjoyed separately, to ensure safety for all attendees.

Speaking of safety, for those wondering why the camp can run with families rather than the traditional summer experience, Camp Horizons explains, “Each family will have their own cabin and bathroom. Activities and meals will also be done by family, and social distancing practices will be followed.” The camp is following increased disinfecting guidelines, social distancing measures and more to ensure attendees safety.
