4 Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails to Explore in Northern Virginia

These local spots offer good walks, impressive views, and puppy-loving fun.

By Emily Perez April 23, 2026 at 10:16 am

Northern Virginia’s parks aren’t just for people — they’re for pups, too. From quiet, creek-side trails to lively community parks, these dog-friendly hikes give a mix of scenery and tail-wagging fun. Here’s where to bring your favorite companion on your next walk.

Before you go: Dog owners must keep their dogs leashed while on hikes, unless explicitly told otherwise. Visitors should also be mindful of nature and wildlife and avoid other animals, bodies of water, and natural habitats.

Bull Run Occoquan Trail

For a quieter outing, this 5,000-acre wooded trail guides hikers through varied terrain. The long-distance trail is filled with creeks and streams giving dogs plenty to explore. Head deeper into the forest for some quality time with your four-legged friend. 10875 Hampton Rd., Fairfax Station

Burke Lake Park

This all-in-one park is ideal for full family outings with attractions including a campsite, carousel, and mini golf. Many parts of the trail offer shaded areas and pass by Burke Lake, best for a brisk walk or run. Dogs will be sure to make new friends at this highly frequented park. 7315 Ox Rd., Fairfax Station

Mason District Park

Take a relaxing walk after work on the trails of this Annandale Park. Make your way around the entire park or take a shorter loop around the pond. If your dog still has some pent-up energy, head over to the nearby dog park. 12055 Government Center Pkwy., Fairfax

Great Falls Park

Have your dog become a B.A.R.K. ranger at Great Falls Park by following the park’s code of conduct for dogs, including bagging waste, keeping your pet leashed, respecting wildlife, and staying on marked trails. Be sure to visit during the week if your pup enjoys the quiet as it can get busy on the weekends. 9200 Old Dominion Dr., McLean
