The Town of Herndon will host its annual Kids Trout Fishing Derby on March 21 from 8 a.m. to noon.
This family-friendly tradition allows kids ages 2 to 15 to try their hand at trout fishing. The event is held along the Sugarland Run stream, behind the Herndon Police Station. There will be opportunities for kids to learn how to bait, cast, hook, and prepare fish.
Trout Unlimited, a nonprofit that works to preserve and clean rivers and streams, will be on hand to show participants how to clean and store fish. There will also be fishing poles and equipment for guest use.

Sugarland Run was part of a stream restoration project that wrapped up around 2024. The departments of Parks and Recreation and Public Works collaborated to reduce the pollution and improve environmental conditions in the stream.
Adults are not permitted to fish during the kids-only fishing time and children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone over age 16 needs to have a valid fishing license in order to fish.
Organizers suggest participants wear shoes that can get wet or muddy. Tickets are $10 online (until March 20 at 4 p.m.) or $15 per child on-site.
