A new addition to Prince William County’s parks is putting a high-tech spin on outdoor play.
The Sona interactive dance and play arch is open and located in the courtyard between the Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center and Chinn Park Library in Woodbridge. The arch introduces a motion-based gaming experience designed to get residents of all ages moving. According to the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation, it’s the first and only installation of its kind in the DC region.
Standing 13 feet tall, the arch uses motion-sensing cameras and sound to guide players through a rotating lineup of games. Users interact with the system through full-body movement, dancing and reacting to audio cues as they play.
The games are designed to be both active and social. Some options, like “Dance Battle,” challenge participants to match rhythm and movement. Others, like “Results Race” focus on quick reactions and agility. Other activities emphasize memory, coordination, and teamwork.
“We’re so excited to bring this unique piece of recreation equipment to Prince William County,” said Seth Hendler-Voss, director of Prince William County Parks and Recreation. “Our hope is that the inclusive Sona arch becomes another place for community members of all ages and abilities to come together and have some fun trying out all the games and activities.”
The Sona arch is developed by Finland-based Lappset Group. There are 50 similar installations across the country.
