The kids are out of school for a long weekend after Thanksgiving, but if you head to a museum in DC or NoVA, they’ll have the chance to learn and have fun. Check out these museum events and exhibitions happening in DC and NoVA over Thanksgiving weekend.  

Grandma Moses: A Good Day’s Work 

November 25–July 12, 2026 

After its opening was delayed amidst the government shutdown, this exhibit from artist Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses will be on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. You can view Moses’ compelling images of America, including paintings inspired by her time in Virginia. Eighth and G streets NW, Washington, DC, free 

Season’s Greenings: Dino-Mite! 

November 27–January 4, 2026

The United States Botanic Garden is celebrating the holiday season by filling its conservatory with poinsettias, holiday décor, and DC landmarks made of crafts. This year, you’ll also find dinosaur displays made of plants, as well as model trains. 100 Maryland Ave. SW, Washington, DC, free 

Native American Heritage Day 

November 28, 11:30 a.m.–4 p.m. 

Celebrate Native American history and culture at the National Museum of the American Indian. This day-long event includes performances from Navajo hoop dancer Joseph Secondy, plus talks from the museum’s curators. 

Water’s Edge: The Art of Truman Lowe 

November 2025–January 2027

At the National Museum of the American Indian, view the works of Hoocąk (Ho-Chunk) artist Truman Lowe, who specializes in minimalist sculptures from organic materials. The exhibit has nearly 50 sculptures, drawings, and paintings. Fourth Street and Independence Avenue, Washington, DC, free 

American Winners: Athletes and Entertainers Who Shaped the Nation

The Virginia 250 Passport 

Through December 31, 2026

As part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration, the Virginia 250 Passport invites people to visit a host of museums in the state.
