7 Budget-Friendly Events in Northern Virginia for Under $15

Options include a petting zoo, crafts, a magic show, and several are free of charge.

Looking for ways to entertain the family that won’t break the bank? We’ve rounded up seven family-friendly plus budget-friendly events that are just $15 or less per person — and many are free of charge. Put these events on your calendar for some affordable family fun.

Kids and Family Festival Petting Zoo at Shipgarten

March 23, noon–6 p.m.

Take the whole family to enjoy a petting zoo at Shipgarten Tysons Corner. In addition to animals, there will be free face painting, arts and crafts, and moonbounces. Dogs are also welcome, with pup cups on hand for hungry canines, too. 7581 Colshire Dr., McLean, free

Drew Blue Shoes at Frying Pan Farm Park

April 1, 10–10:45 a.m.

Check out Drew Blue Shoes at Frying Pan Farm Park. The magician will be on hand for a morning of fun and laughs as he pulls coins out of children’s ears, makes rubber chickens fly, and more. 2709 West Ox Rd., Herndon, $10 per person, ages 2+

Spring Fest at McLean Community Center

April 5, 10 a.m.–noon

Enjoy all things spring with themed arts and crafts, entertainment, and photos with the Easter Bunny. 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, free

Carlyle House Family Fun Day — Poetry Palooza

April 5, noon–3 p.m.

Spend the afternoon reading and crafting at the Carlyle House Magnolia Terrace on the first Saturday of the month. From April through November, there will be themed afternoons, with Poetry Palooza up first. The program is for all ages, but some of the crafts may be difficult for children under 4. 121 N. Fairfax St., Alexandria, free, but donations are encouraged.

Get Hooked! at Reservoir Park

April 26, 11 a.m.–noon

If you’re looking to get your little ones to try a new hobby, consider teaching them how to fish. Participants will learn all of the essentials along with sustainable practices, like catch-and-release methods. Children under 12 must attend with a registered adult and advance registration is required. 22211 Water Vista Dr., Ashburn, $10

Sensory Friendly Family Evening at Mount Vernon

April 22, 6–7 p.m.

Neurodivergent individuals and their families are welcome to explore Mount Vernon for an evening. Guests get a sensory bag upon arrival, while supplies last. Attendees can explore the orientation center and other parts of the museum all at their own pace. 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon, $11 for adults and youth, free for children 5 and under and members

Earth Day Every Day on Langston Boulevard

April 27, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., free

The annual event, now in its fourth year, includes community exhibits, an art market, the Arlington Art Truck, food and drink vendors, and kids’ activities. The event is funded through private donations and sponsorships and works to bring the community together to help it become a more environmentally sustainable and livable place.
